Vernell Brown III Shines As Florida Dominates Campbell

Gainesville, Fla. — The Florida Gators continued their strong start to the 2026 season Saturday night, cruising past the Campbell Fighting Camels 52-3 inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The victory moved Florida to 2-0 on the season and gave head coach Jon Sumrall another convincing performance as the Gators prepare to enter the heart of their SEC schedule.

While Florida received contributions across the roster, Vernell Brown III stole the spotlight with one of the most electric special-teams performances in recent program history. Brown III returned two punts for touchdowns in the second quarter, breaking the game wide open. His first score came on a 64-yard return, and he followed it with a 70-yard touchdown return less than four minutes later. The back-to-back returns gave Florida a commanding 24-3 advantage and sent the Swamp into a frenzy.

Brown III also found the end zone as a receiver, hauling in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Philo. He finished with three receptions for 43 yards and three total touchdowns. The performance was particularly impressive on special teams, where Brown III finished with 219 punt-return yards. His two punt-return touchdowns made him the first Florida player with multiple punt-return scores in a game since Jacquez Green did it in 1996 against Kentucky.

Florida’s offense continued to roll behind Philo and running back Jadan Baugh. Philo completed 16 of 21 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception, while Baugh added 136 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular 75-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

Dallas Wilson also continued his strong start to the season, recording five catches for 104 yards and a touchdown.

After Campbell managed a 29-yard field goal on its opening possession, Florida quickly seized control. The Gators answered with a Philo rushing touchdown and a field goal before exploding for 35 points in the second quarter. By halftime, Florida had turned a competitive opening period into a 45-3 rout.

The Gators added another touchdown on Baugh’s 75-yard run in the third quarter, and the defense and reserves handled the rest of the night as Florida cruised to the 49-point victory.

Florida finished with 514 total yards while limiting Campbell to just 210. The Gators also generated 173 return yards, with Brown III accounting for the overwhelming majority of them. After opening the season with a 66-21 victory over Florida Atlantic, Florida has now scored 118 points through its first two games. More importantly, the Gators are showing signs of becoming the explosive, aggressive team Sumrall envisioned when he took over the program.

Brown III’s performance was the latest example. With his ability to impact the game as a receiver, runner and return specialist, the sophomore playmaker is quickly establishing himself as one of Florida’s most dangerous weapons. The Gators will now turn their attention toward SEC play, carrying a perfect 2-0 record and plenty of momentum into their matchup with the Auburn Tigers on the road next Saturday night.
