Florida Gators Ground Game Leads To Huge Road Win

The Florida Gators opened Southeastern Conference play with a statement. Behind a dominant rushing attack and a monster performance from running back Jadan Baugh, Florida went on the road and defeated the Auburn Tigers 44-39 Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The victory moved the Gators to 3-0 on the season and gave first-year head coach Jon Sumrall a signature win in his first SEC game. The Gators’ ground game was the difference. Baugh repeatedly gashed the Auburn defense, finishing with 162 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. His 53-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter was particularly important, giving Florida a 41-24 advantage and appearing to put the game out of reach. Auburn, however, refused to go quietly. The Tigers rallied late behind quarterback Byrum Brown, who finished with 271 passing yards and three touchdown passes while adding another rushing touchdown. Auburn cut the deficit to five points with just 30 seconds remaining after Brown connected with Chas Nimrod for a 35-yard touchdown. Florida recovered the ensuing onside kick, allowing the Gators to run out the clock and secure one of their biggest road victories in recent years.

Baugh Sets The Tone

From the opening quarter, Florida established its identity. Baugh scored on a two-yard touchdown run to give the Gators an early lead, and Duke Clark later added a 20-yard rushing touchdown. Florida’s offensive line consistently created running lanes, allowing the Gators to control the line of scrimmage against an Auburn defense that had entered the game allowing just 76.5 rushing yards per contest. Florida ultimately rushed for 245 yards, with Baugh accounting for the majority of the production. The ability to stay committed to the run also helped take pressure off quarterback Aaron Philo, who was making his first career road start in an SEC environment.

Aaron Philo Delivers

Aaron Philo wasn’t asked to carry the offense by himself, but he made several important plays when Florida needed them. The sophomore quarterback completed 15 of 22 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. His biggest target was Vernell Brown III, who finished with five catches for 86 yards. Dallas Wilson also came through with four receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown, providing Florida with another explosive threat through the air. Together, Florida’s rushing and passing attacks produced 499 total yards.

A Wild Finish

Despite Florida’s control for much of the night, Auburn made the final minutes uncomfortable. The Tigers scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, including two late touchdowns, and had the ball with an opportunity to make an improbable comeback. But Florida’s defense came up with just enough plays. The Gators sacked Brown twice during Auburn’s final possession before Nimrod’s late touchdown reception. After Florida recovered the onside kick, the Gators were able to kneel out the remaining seconds and officially close out the victory.

A Statement On The Road

The win represents more than simply another mark in the win column. Florida entered Jordan-Hare Stadium facing its first true test of the 2026 season after opening the year with dominant victories over Florida Atlantic and Campbell. The Gators answered that challenge by rushing for 245 yards, controlling possession and finding ways to make critical plays in a hostile SEC environment.

For Sumrall, it was his first SEC victory as Florida’s head coach. For the Gators, it was a 3-0 start and a road win that could become an important early chapter in the program’s new era. Florida’s offense showed it can run the football against SEC competition. Baugh established himself as the centerpiece of that attack, while Philo showed composure in his first SEC road start. The Gators now return home with momentum, confidence and their first conference victory of the season. And after what they accomplished on the Plains, Florida has officially announced that it has arrived in SEC play.
