Tramell Jones Jr. Needs To Be The Starting Quarterback
The Florida Gators are approaching a point in their season where difficult decisions need to be made, and one of the biggest decisions facing head coach Jon Sumrall is at quarterback. After another disappointing performance against the Georgia Bulldogs, it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify keeping Aaron Philo as the team’s starting quarterback. It’s time for Florida to turn the offense over to Tramell Jones Jr. Florida’s 27-8 loss to Georgia exposed several issues that have continued to hold the Gators back. While the struggles cannot be placed entirely on the quarterback, the offense needs a spark, and making a change under center could be exactly what this team needs.
It’s Time To Give Tramell Jones Jr. The Opportunity
Jones has already shown that he can give Florida a different dimension at quarterback. His performance in his first career start against Texas demonstrated the potential he brings to the position and gave Gators fans reason to believe he could be part of the program’s future. His ability to create plays with his arm and legs gives Florida another element offensively. Jones brings mobility that can help extend plays, escape pressure, and create opportunities when the initial play breaks down. More importantly, his performance against Texas showed that he is capable of handling a significant opportunity on the road against a talented opponent. That experience should give the coaching staff confidence in what he can potentially bring to the offense moving forward.
Why Florida Needs A Change
Philo deserves credit for competing and taking on the responsibility of leading Florida’s offense. However, the Gators cannot afford to continue running out the same offensive approach if the results aren’t improving. Florida needs consistency, explosiveness, and someone who can provide a spark when the offense gets stagnant. The quarterback position is too important to ignore when evaluating why the offense continues to struggle. A quarterback change isn’t necessarily a guarantee that everything will suddenly improve. The offensive line, play calling, and supporting cast all have responsibilities in getting this offense back on track. However, sometimes a change at the most important position can give an entire unit a fresh start. Jones deserves the opportunity to show what he can do with the starting job for an extended period of time rather than constantly looking over his shoulder.
The Future Starts Now
With the season moving forward, Sumrall and his coaching staff need to evaluate what gives Florida the best chance to compete. At this point, giving Jones the starting job should be at the top of that list. The Gators need to find out what they have in their young quarterback. If Jones is going to be part of the long-term plans in Gainesville, there is no better time to give him meaningful experience and allow him to develop through the challenges of SEC football. Florida has plenty of areas that need improvement, but quarterback is one position where a change could make an immediate difference. The Gators cannot afford to keep hoping the same formula eventually produces different results. Tramell Jones Jr. has already shown flashes of what he can bring to the table, and now it’s time to give him the keys to the offense.
