Thursday night was a tough game for Gator fans to watch, but it was just week one of the college football season. The team will be looking to bounce back from the road loss to Utah in their home debut against McNeese St. They have an opportunity to clean up some of the mistakes they made and get some young players some playing experience.
I expect Florida to try to establish the run tomorrow night with Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne. They combined to rush 10 times for only 31 yards. It starts up front with the offensive line creating running lanes for them, but at the same time, there were moments where it looked like they abandoned the run. I also expect to see both Treyaun Webb and Ja'Kobi Jackson to get some time in the backfield as well. Florida is very high on Webb, a true freshman from Jacksonville, and they believe he has a very bright future.
McNeese State is coming off a 52-34 loss last Saturday to Tarleton State at home to open up the season. A bright spot for them in the game was running back/kick returner Cam Thomas, who was named the Week 1 Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance. He had a 91 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
He's definitely gonna have the attention of Billy Napier, defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong and the Gators defense.
With Tennessee coming to town next Saturday night for a big time SEC East showdown, Florida is looking to clean up some mistakes going into that game. While Graham Mertz isn't expected to throw the ball 44 times again, I do believe he's gonna make some good throws, get the ball to his playmakers and play a clean game. We usually see improvement from week 1 to week 2. If the Gators show improvement, I believe the fans will go into the game against Tennessee with more confidence. The team is extremely motivated, and wanna show that they're a much better team than what they showed last Thursday night.
