Florida vs. FAU Preview

A new era of Florida Gators football is finally here.

The Gators will open the 2026 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, when they welcome the Florida Atlantic Owls to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the first game of the Jon Sumrall era. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network. For Florida, this game represents much more than simply the first game on the schedule. It is the first opportunity to see Sumrall’s vision take the field after an offseason of major changes to the program.

A New Era Begins

Sumrall enters his first season as Florida’s head coach with the task of changing the trajectory of the program. After a 4-8 season in 2025, expectations are high for a Gators team looking to reestablish itself in the SEC. The season opener should provide an early glimpse at the identity Sumrall wants his team to develop: physical, disciplined and aggressive on both sides of the football. Saturday night will also mark Sumrall’s first game coaching in The Swamp, adding another layer of excitement to an already important night.

Aaron Philo Takes Over at Quarterback

Perhaps the biggest storyline heading into the opener is the quarterback position. After competing with Tramell Jones Jr. throughout the offseason, Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo was named Florida’s starting quarterback by Sumrall on Aug. 24.

Philo followed offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech to Gainesville and brings experience in Faulkner’s offensive system. During his time with the Yellow Jackets, Philo appeared in eight games and completed 57.8% of his passes for 938 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Now, he gets the opportunity to officially begin his Florida career. How quickly Philo can settle into the offense will be one of the biggest things to watch against FAU. Florida doesn’t necessarily need him to put up huge numbers in the opener. Instead, efficiency, decision-making and protecting the football will be critical.

The Gators’ Offense

Florida’s offense enters the season with plenty of talent but also plenty of questions.

Faulkner takes over as offensive coordinator after spending the previous three seasons in the same role at Georgia Tech.  His familiarity with Philo should be an advantage as Florida installs its new offensive system. The Gators will also look to establish the running game and take pressure off their new starting quarterback. If Florida can consistently run the football, create manageable third downs and allow Philo to make plays in rhythm, the offense should have an opportunity to start the season fast.

The matchup also provides an early test for Florida’s revamped offensive line.

A New-Look Defense

On the other side of the ball, Florida will begin its first season under defensive coordinator Brad White.

The Gators have emphasized improving their physicality and consistency defensively, and FAU provides an opportunity to establish that identity from the opening kickoff. Florida will need to avoid allowing the Owls to hang around. For a team with bigger SEC challenges coming later in September, getting off to a strong start defensively could set the tone for the entire season.

History Favors Florida

Florida has dominated the all-time series against FAU.

The Gators are 4-0 against the Owls, including a 35-14 victory in the most recent meeting on Sept. 4, 2021. All four previous matchups have taken place in Gainesville. While history doesn’t determine what happens Saturday, Florida will enter the game as the more experienced SEC program with considerably higher expectations.

What to Watch

1. Aaron Philo’s debut: How comfortable will the new QB1 look in his first game running Florida’s offense?

2. The running game: Establishing the ground attack would make life easier for Philo and the passing game.

3. Offensive line play: Florida needs to protect its new quarterback and create running lanes.

4. Defensive identity: Saturday will be the first real opportunity to see what a Brad White-led defense looks like.

5. First-quarter performance: A fast start would immediately settle some of the questions surrounding the new coaching staff.

Final Outlook

Florida should enter Saturday night’s matchup with one goal: start the Sumrall era the right way.

FAU represents a manageable opening opponent, but the game still carries enormous importance for a Florida program trying to move forward. The Gators need to play with energy, avoid turnovers and establish their physical identity from the beginning.

Most importantly, fans will finally get their first look at a new Florida team. With Philo officially taking the reins at quarterback and Sumrall beginning his tenure in The Swamp, the 2026 season opener represents the first chapter of a new era.
