Florida Dominates FAU

The Jon Sumrall era officially began with a statement. The Florida Gators opened the 2026 season Saturday night by dominating the Florida Atlantic Owls, cruising to a 66-21 victory in front of a packed crowd at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. From the opening kickoff, Florida played with the energy and explosiveness that had been promised throughout the offseason. The Gators scored 17 points in the first quarter and added another 21 in the second, taking a commanding 38-14 lead into halftime.

Florida’s offense was nearly unstoppable. The Gators finished the night with 624 total yards, including 276 rushing yards and 337 passing yards. Florida averaged an impressive 9.6 yards per play while consistently creating explosive plays against the Owls’ defense. Quarterback Aaron Philo delivered an impressive debut as Florida’s starter, throwing for 275 yards while helping orchestrate an offense that found the end zone repeatedly. Philo’s performance provided an encouraging first glimpse of what the Gators’ new-look offense can become under offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.

The ground game was just as impressive. Running back Jadan Baugh led the way with 160 rushing yards, helping Florida control the line of scrimmage and keep FAU’s defense on its heels throughout the night. The Gators ultimately piled up 281 rushing yards compared to just 113 for the Owls. Through the air, Vernell Brown III was a major difference-maker. The talented receiver finished with 117 receiving yards, providing Philo with a reliable target and adding another explosive element to Florida’s offense.

Defensively, Florida eventually settled in after FAU managed to put together some offensive success during the first half. The Owls finished with 389 total yards, but the Gators shut them out in the fourth quarter while Florida continued to extend its advantage. The final three quarters told the story of the night. Florida scored 21 points in the second quarter, 14 in the third and another seven in the fourth, turning what could have been a competitive season opener into a comfortable blowout. For Sumrall, it was an ideal beginning to his tenure in Gainesville.

After Florida endured a difficult 4-8 campaign in 2025, the new head coach arrived with the task of changing the culture and restoring excitement around the program. Sumrall brought a 43-12 record from his previous four seasons at Troy and Tulane, including conference championships at both stops.

Saturday night provided the first evidence that the Gators may be headed in a different direction.

Florida played fast. Florida played physical. Most importantly, Florida finished.

The Gators now leave their season opener with a 1-0 record, plenty of momentum and a convincing 66-21 victory that gave Gator Nation its first taste of the Sumrall era. It was only one game, but it was certainly the kind of opening statement Florida needed.
