Aaron Philo Named Florida Gators Starting Quarterback

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators have their quarterback.

Head coach Jon Sumrall announced Monday that Aaron Philo will take the majority of first-team repetitions and is being prepared as the starting quarterback for Week 1, ending a months-long competition with Tramell Jones Jr.

Philo, a transfer from Georgia Tech, followed Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner to Gainesville after spending the previous two seasons in Faulkner’s offense with the Yellow Jackets. That familiarity with the system gave Philo an early advantage, but Sumrall made clear throughout the offseason that Jones had a legitimate opportunity to win the job.

Now, Philo has emerged from the competition on top.

“Aaron Philo is going to go with the ones more than anyone,” Sumrall said Monday. “As we prepare for game one, Aaron Philo, we are preparing for him to be the starter for Week 1.”

A Competition That Lasted All Spring and Summer

The battle between Philo and Jones began during spring practice and continued throughout fall camp.

Just a week earlier, Sumrall said neither quarterback had separated himself by a significant margin. Both players showed enough during camp to keep the competition close, with Sumrall emphasizing that the eventual starter would be determined by who consistently executed at the highest level.

That competition appears to have pushed both quarterbacks forward.

Sumrall praised both players after the decision, saying he was “fired up” about the quarterback room and grateful for the way both had handled the competition. Jones is still expected to receive some first-team work, but Philo will receive the lion’s share of those repetitions as Florida begins shifting its focus toward the season opener.

Philo Brings Experience and Familiarity

The decision gives Florida a quarterback who already understands Faulkner’s offensive system.

During his time at Georgia Tech, Philo appeared in eight games over two seasons and made his first collegiate start against Gardner-Webb in 2025. He completed 21 of 28 passes for 373 yards, one touchdown and one interception in that game. Overall, he completed 57.8% of his passes for 938 yards and two touchdowns during his Georgia Tech career. That familiarity could be particularly important for a Florida offense entering its first season under Sumrall and Faulkner. Rather than spending the majority of his time learning the basic structure of the offense, Philo has been able to concentrate on timing, chemistry and executing the system at a high level.

Jones Still Has a Role

Although Philo won the starting job, Sumrall has continued to speak highly of Jones.

The redshirt freshman made significant strides throughout the offseason and earned the respect of the coaching staff during the competition. Sumrall previously described Jones as someone who had made considerable progress operating the offense, while also praising his comfort in the pocket, arm talent and ability to make plays. For now, however, the Gators are moving forward with Philo as QB1.

That decision allows Florida to begin building the cohesion necessary for the opening game while still keeping Jones involved in the offense.

The Philo Era Begins

Florida’s quarterback situation has been one of the biggest questions surrounding Sumrall’s first season in Gainesville. That question has now been answered.

Philo will lead the Gators onto the field when Florida opens the 2026 season against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. For Philo, the opportunity represents the culmination of a competition that began months ago. For Sumrall, it marks another major decision as he builds the foundation of his first Florida team. The competition is over. Now, the real test begins.
