5 Keys To Victory For Florida vs. Ole Miss
The Florida Gators return home Saturday for their first SEC game of the season at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, welcoming the No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels to Gainesville. Florida enters the matchup 3-0 after defeating Auburn 44-39 on the road. The Gators have been one of the nation’s most productive offenses through three games, averaging 54 points per game, but Ole Miss presents a much different challenge. The Rebels are also 3-0 and are coming off a 32-24 victory over LSU. If Florida wants to remain undefeated, here are five keys that could determine the outcome.
1. Keep Trinidad Chambliss From Taking Over
The biggest challenge for Florida’s defense could be containing Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. Chambliss is coming off a 363-yard, three-touchdown performance against LSU, including two touchdown passes and another score on the ground. His ability to extend plays and create both through the air and with his legs puts significant pressure on Florida’s defense. The Gators cannot afford to consistently lose contain or allow Chambliss to turn broken plays into explosive gains. Keeping him inside the pocket and forcing Ole Miss to execute consistently on third down will be critical.
2. Win the Battle Against Will Echoles
Florida’s offensive line will face one of its toughest tests of the season against Ole Miss defensive tackle Will Echoles. Echoles has been the Rebels’ most disruptive defender through three games, recording 10 total pressures and nine quarterback hurries. His ability to collapse the pocket from the interior could make life difficult for Aaron Philo. Florida doesn’t necessarily need to eliminate Echoles from the game, but it must prevent him from consistently disrupting the timing of the offense. Quick throws, movement at the line of scrimmage and strong interior protection could help neutralize his impact.
3. Limit Explosive Pass Plays
Florida’s secondary will have to respond after surrendering 271 passing yards to Auburn last week. Ole Miss has multiple receivers capable of creating explosive plays, while Chambliss has already demonstrated that he can distribute the football effectively. Four Rebels have recorded more than 150 receiving yards through three games. The Gators need to prevent the big play and make Ole Miss earn its yards. Giving up short completions is one thing; allowing receivers to consistently get behind the secondary could quickly change the game.
4. Protect Aaron Philo and Create Efficient Passing Downs
Jadan Baugh has been outstanding on the ground, but Florida cannot become one-dimensional against an Ole Miss defense that has produced pressure from multiple players. Philo enters the game with 721 passing yards and six touchdowns through three games. Ole Miss, meanwhile, has had seven different players record a sack this season. Florida needs to keep Philo clean enough to work through his progressions and take advantage of opportunities downfield. Staying ahead of the chains will be especially important because obvious passing situations could allow the Rebels’ pass rush to dictate the game.
5. Make The Swamp A Factor
Florida’s first SEC home game under Jon Sumrall comes against a top-five Ole Miss team, making the atmosphere at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium an important part of the matchup. The Gators have already proven they can win an SEC road game after beating Auburn, but this will be a different environment and a different type of opponent. Florida needs to start fast, avoid unnecessary penalties and capitalize on momentum-changing plays. The Gators committed 16 penalties for 138 yards against Auburn, something they cannot afford to repeat against an Ole Miss team capable of taking advantage of extra opportunities.
Final Thoughts
Florida has already shown that it can score points and run the football at a high level. Against Ole Miss, however, the margin for error will be smaller. Containing Chambliss, protecting Philo, limiting explosive passes, handling Echoles in the trenches and playing disciplined football at home could be the difference between Florida improving to 4-0 and suffering its first loss of the season. The Gators have momentum entering the matchup. Now they have an opportunity to turn that momentum into another statement SEC victory.
